FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin volleyball team resumed conference play on Friday (Oct. 18) night, welcoming the Defiance Yellow Jackets to the Spurlock Center in search of their second straight league win.
The Grizzlies (15-10, 3-2 HCAC) got another career night from junior outside hitter Kyndall Boyll, who set a new career-high with 21 kills just two day after establishing a personal best total for put aways. But her effort wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets (14-9, 2-3 HCAC) rallied to win the match in five sets, 20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-9.
Franklin's attack was the story of the first set, with the Grizzlies collecting 19 points off kills and hitting .245 to roll to take the opening game by five points. The host's led by as many as seven late in the set, before shutting down a Defiance rally by taking three of the last four points to close things out.
The Grizzly defense took over in the second set, holding Defiance to just four kills and a -.094 on the attack. Franklin put the second set out of reach with an 8-1 run that stretched their advantage to double-figures late in the set, using that advantage to coast to victory.
But the Yellow Jackets re-grouped after the second set, besting the Grizzlies in each of the final three games. Defiance racked up double-digit kills in all three set victories while holding the FC attack to under .100 in the final three sets.
Abby Sewell and Jenna Spini just missed reaching double figures in kills, putting up nine and eight successful attacks, respectively. Billie Jarrett handed out 44 assists while Allison Thompson led the way with 26 digs.
Franklin looks to bounce back next Wednesday (Oct. 23) night, when they hit the road to take on conference-leading Transylvania. First serve from Kentucky is set for 7:00 p.m.
