DELAWARE, Ohio – The Franklin College volleyball team stepped back on the court on Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon for a pair of games on day two of the Bishop Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
Franklin (4-7) dropped both of their contests on Saturday, falling in five sets to Trine and three sets to host Ohio Wesleyan. Following the completion of the invitational, sophomore middle blocker Abigail Sewell was named to the all-tournament team, leading Franklin with 24 kills over three matches.
Trine 3 – Franklin 2
The opening match saw Franklin jump out to an early lead in the opening set before surging ahead of the Thunder midway through the set on their way to a 25-17 win and a 1-0 lead. Game two was a battle that saw Trine erase a six-point deficit to tie things up late before back-to-back kills from Timber Falin and Lexie Gifford closed out a 25-23 win.
Set three saw the Grizzlies finish with a game-high .212 hitting percentage, but they weren't able to overcome a Trine offense that swung at a .419 clip that powered the Thunder to a 25-20 win in set three. Trine's offense stayed hot over the final two sets, completing the comeback with 25-18 and 15-8 wins.
Sewell led the Grizzlies with 11 kills and a pair of blocks with Kyra Harvey's 10 kills good for second on the team. Allison Thompson has 22 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the year. Libby Stahl topped all Grizzlies with 18 digs.
Ohio Wesleyan 3 – Franklin 0
Game one saw the Grizzlies erase an early five-point deficit to draw even at 9-9 before a 7-0 run by the Bishops gave the home side a lead they would hold onto the rest of the way, taking game one 25-18. Set two was decided by a 12-2 Ohio Wesleyan run that led to a 25-16 victory and a two-set lead. Franklin battled hard to keep the match alive, but came up on the wrong end of a 25-21 decision in set three.
Harvey finished with a team-high eight kills, followed by six from Sewell. Thompson and Mackenzie Waldran had nine assists each while Stahl had 12 digs. Falin led the team with a career-high four blocks, three of the solo variety.
Franklin returns to action at home on Tuesday (Sept. 18), taking on St. Mary-of-the-Woods. First serve from the Spurlock Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
