WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Franklin volleyball team headed east for a Wednesday (Sept. 5) night showdown with the Quakers of Wilmington College.
The Grizzlies (1-4) were dominant out of the gate, jumping out to an early two-set lead on their way to a 3-1 win over the Quakers (0-3). The Franklin offense was especially effective in the win, finishing the night with a .277 team attacking percentage. Three Grizzlies finished the night with double-digit kills, with Kyra Harvey (12), Kyndall Boyll (12) and Lexie Gifford (11) leading the attack.
The first set opened with Franklin jumping out to a 11-7 lead and never looking back. Franklin continued to build on their advantage before putting game one away by taking 14 of the final 21 points to earn a 25-13 win. The Franklin attack was exceptional in the opening game, finishing with a .433 hitting percentage and no attacking errors.
Game two saw more of the same, with Franklin sprinting out to an early 13-2 lead. Franklin closed out the second set by taking the final four points to put the exclamation point on a 25-11 set two victory and a 2-0 lead. Franklin's offense was dominant once again, finishing with 13 kills and a .370 attacking percentage in set two.
Wilmington answered with a 25-22 third set win to keep the match alive, but Franklin would put the finishing touches on the win with a dominant fourth set. Leading 15-11 midway through the game, the Grizzlies went on a 10-2 run down the stretch to close out the contest.
Sophomore Gifford led the Grizzlies with a .500 hitting percentage on the night, finishing with just one error on 20 attempts to go with her 11 kills. Boyll finished with a career-best .321 hitting percentage while Abigail Sewell hit. 294 with seven kills.
Freshman Allison Thompson set a new season-high with 18 helpers, followed by a 14-assist performance from Mackenzie Waldran. Libby Stahl led the back row on defense, finishing with a season-high 20 digs while Gifford, Sewell, Jenna Spini and Timber Falin all recorded a pair of rejections.
Franklin continues their season on Saturday (Sept. 8) afternoon, traveling to Hanover, Ind. for the Hanover Invitational. The Grizzlies will face off with Berea College at 10:00 a.m. before closing out the event against Centre College at 2:00 p.m.
