WALTHAM, Mass. – Playing their season opener not far from Boston and their Green Monster, the Franklin College volleyball team turned in a monster performance of their own on Saturday night, sweeping Wellesley College in their season opener at the Brandeis Invitational.

The Griz hit .292 as a team, committing just seven attacking errors on 96 attempts on the night. Defensively, the always air-tight Grizzlies forced 24 Wellesley errors and limited their opponent to a miniscule .000 hitting percentage.

Both teams finished the first set with just eight kills, but the Franklin defense forced 10 Wellesley turnovers to easily take the first set, 25-16. The second set was a battle between the two clubs, but the Griz were able to dig in late and hold on for a 25-22 win in game two.

The final set of the night was a clinic by the Franklin attack. The Grizzlies didn't commit a single attacking error and hit .462 as a team in the last set to cruise to another 25-16 win, putting an emphatic stamp on the season-opening win.

Kennedy Surface and Gab Arthur led the Grizzlies with nine kills each while hitting .381 and .450, respectively. In her first career match, freshman Abigail Sewell racked up eight kills on 14 attempts, finishing with a .500 hitting percentage while adding five service aces.

Junior libero Libby Stahl paced the Franklin defense with 18 kills and was joined in double figures by Arthur (13 kills) and Carrigan Peak (12 kills). Nico Morris racked up a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs of her own.

Franklin looks to close out the Brandeis Invitational strong with two more games on Saturday. The Griz take on host Brandeis at 11:00 a.m. before closing out the weekend against Babson at 1:00 p.m.
