Volleyball Loses Hard-Fought Five-Set Match to MSJ

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team dropped to 4-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play following a hard-fought five-set loss to Mount St. Joseph University on Friday inside the Spurlock Center.

The Grizzlies (15-12, 4-3 HCAC) had three players reach double figures in kills, led by senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) with 17 kills. Senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) chipped in 14 kills, while sophomore Amanda Lelivelt (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Riverside Brookfield) added 12 kills.

Junior Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) distributed 47 assists, while adding 19 digs defensively in the contest.

Senior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) recorded a match-high 39 digs. Sophomore Sarah Labra (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) chipped in 16 digs. Senior Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 10 digs, while senior Hope Steel (New Palestine, Ind./Lutheran) added nine digs.

Franklin used an 8-2 run late in the first set to win the opening frame 25-23 and grab early momentum of the match. MSJ rebounded to square the match with a 25-22 triumph in the second set. The Grizzlies took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-20 victory in the third frame. The visitors forced the deciding fifth set with a 25-15 win in the fourth set. MSJ used a late rally to square the fifth set at 14-14. The team traded points until the Lions won the last two points for the victory.

Franklin returns to action on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. when it travels to Centre College for a non-conference match.
