Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win in five sets for the second consecutive match.
The Grizzlies improved to 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a hard-fought home victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-10, 15-13) on Wednesday inside the Spurlock Center.
The program honored local breast cancer survivors and helped raised public awareness for breast cancer with a Dig Pink Match.
Franklin earned a five-set triumph over Albion College (Michigan) on Saturday. The team has now won seven consecutive matches.
Rose-Hulman (10-13, 0-3 HCAC) used late rallies to capture the first two sets. However, Franklin (13-9, 3-0 HCAC) turned the tables in the third set by winning seven of the final eight points to take the set.
The hosts jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back in squaring the match at two sets apiece. Franklin had 11 kills compared to one hitting error during the fourth set.
In the deciding fifth set, Rose-Hulman led 8-6 before the hosts made another comeback. Consecutive blocks by senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) gave Franklin a 12-10 lead. The two teams would later be tied at 12-12 before two hitting errors by Rose-Hulman would give the Grizzlies the momentum. A kill by sophomore Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) sealed the victory.
Sophomore Amanda Lelivelt (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Riverside Brookfield) led Franklin with 15 kills and a .444 hitting percentage for the match. Harvey chipped in 11 kills, while senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) added 10 kills. Senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) recorded seven kills.
Junior Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) helped distribute the offensive attack with 46 assists. She added three serving aces, and had 14 digs defensively.
Senior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) had a match-high 26 digs. She recorded one serving ace in the victory. Senior Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) posted 17 digs and two aces. Senior Hope Steel (New Palestine, Ind./Lutheran) and sophomore Sarah Labra (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) rounded out the balanced defensive effort each with nine digs.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, October 10 when it travels to Anderson University for a pair of matches. The Grizzlies face Anderson in a league matchup at 1 p.m., before battling the College of Wooster later that afternoon at 3 p.m.
