Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team won its seventh match of the season in defeating Spalding University in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21) on Wednesday evening from the Spurlock Center.
The Grizzlies (7-9) used a 10-4 run late in the opening set to grab early momentum of the match. Strong hitting helped Franklin take the first set with 16 kills compared to two errors.
The second set featured ties at 7, 10, 14, and 19 before a late rally from the Eagles would square the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, the Grizzlies won four consecutive points on the serve of senior Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) to hold a 21-17 lead. The team used that late service push to win the frame by four points.
Franklin won seven of the first 10 points of the fourth set. However, Spalding went on a 10-4 run and held a 13-11 advantage midway through the frame. A kill by sophomore Amanda Lelivelt (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Riverside Brookfield) gave the Grizzlies a 20-19 lead. Franklin regained the lead, 21-20, on a kill from sophomore Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion).
Later in the fourth set, a block from senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) and sophomore Darian Parke (Oakland City, Ind./Wood Memorial) put the team ahead 24-21. A kill by Settle on the next point clinched the victory.
Individually, Settle led Franklin with 14 kills and three blocks. Harvey also reached double figures with 11 kills in the match. Senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) added eight kills.
