Greencastle, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team lost a hard-fought five-set match to DePauw University in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday evening.
The Grizzlies won the opening two sets by 25-20 and 25-22 scores. The hosts Tigers rebounded with 25-12 victories in the third and fourth set scores to square the match. In the deciding fifth set DePauw picked up a 15-9 triumph to win the match.
Franklin recorded 14 kills and a .370 hitting percentage in the first set. Then, the team posted a .278 hitting percentage with six kills and one error during the second set.
Senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the team with 11 kills, while senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) added 10 kills. Sophomore Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) chipped in eight kills.
Junior Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) recorded 26 assists and two serving aces.
Defensively, senior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led the team with 15 digs. Senior Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) recorded six digs. Classmate Hope Steel (New Palestine, Ind./Lutheran), sophomore Sarah Labra (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis), and Young also chipped in four digs.
DePauw's Lauren Falotico had a match-high 21 kills, while Suzanne Peters recorded 12 kills and Quinci Miller added 10 kills.
Franklin returns to the court on Friday, September 4, at 2 p.m., when it battles the University of Dubuque at the Colorado College Classic. The team also faces the host school at 6 p.m. on Friday.
