HCAC Coaches Pick Franklin to Finish Third in 2017 Women's Tennis Poll

GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the second straight year, the Franklin College women's tennis team has been selected third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's (HCAC) preseason poll, voted on by league coaches.

The Grizzlies advanced to the semifinals of the HCAC Tournament a year ago and welcome back five regulars from last season's lineup, received 63 points in the poll, coming in behind league favorite Rose-Hulman and preseason runner-up Hanover. Rose-Hulman garnered 77 points and five first place votes while Hanover is right on their tails with 75 points and the other three first place votes.

Manchester (53 pts), Transylvania (50 pts), Mt. St. Joseph (40 pts), Defiance (34 pts) and Earlham (24 pts) round out the rest of the pre-season rankings.

Franklin finished in third place in 2016 with a 5-3 league record and advanced to the semifinals of the HCAC tournament before falling to Rose-Hulman. The Griz welcome back a pair of junior All-HCAC selections in Karen Dringenburg and Rachel Rose, as well as Honorable Mention All-HCAC pick in sophomore Megan Battles.

Dringenburg went 8-5 as the team's number one singles player and added a sparkling 16-3 record in doubles play in 2016-17. Rose inserted herself into the number two singles spot, going 6-4 while carrying a 12-7 mark in doubles action. Battles is coming off a debut campaign that saw her go 6-5 in singles and 6-3 in doubles play.

Franklin opens the season on Saturday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. when they host a doubles tournament featuring at the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
