Terre Haute, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team won its 2014 spring opener 6-3 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Sunday. The Grizzlies won on five of the six singles courts to avenge a loss in last fall's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Franklin improves to 9-6 on the season. The Grizzlies finished in a three-way tie for second place during the HCAC's fall campaign with a 7-2 league record.
Trailing 2-1 following doubles, freshman Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) began a singles rally by not dropping a game at the No. 5 position. Sophomore Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh) gave Franklin a 3-2 lead with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 singles.
Junior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) defeated Rose-Hulman's Kylie McCollum 8-3 on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) also only dropped three games in a singles triumph at the No. 4 position. Junior Becky Bonomini (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) rounded out the singles winners with an 8-5 victory on the No. 6 court.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. when it hosts Anderson University from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
