Strong Performances Give Swimming and Diving Wins


Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams took top honors in all 32 events in sweeping meets against Manchester University on Saturday in the 2016-17 season dual meet opener.

The men's team defeated the Spartans 241-36, while the women's squad earned a 223-39 triumph in the home meet.

Senior Artur Schneider touched the wall first in winning the 100-yard butterfly event (52.61 seconds).

Junior Sam Hall won the 100-yard backstroke (54.75 seconds), while sophomore Cameron Culp earned a three-second triumph in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.19).

Freshman James Hone placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.07), and classmate Jordan Cermak took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle (49.31 seconds).

In diving, sophomore Will Combs and freshman Jacob Keener placed first in two separate 1-meter diving competitions. Combs tallied 226.05 points from the judges, while Keener had a 146.7 score.

On the women's side, sophomore Mackenzie Dwyer was first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.76) and individual medley (2:17.92) events.

Junior Kaitlin Mans won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.25), while classmate Karlee Demsey took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle (55.84 seconds). Senior Carley Fernandes won the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.66).

Sophomore Bri Gunning took top honors in both 1-meter diving events with a top score of 128.4 points.

Franklin returns to action on Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. when it travels to Millikin University for meets against Lincoln College and Millikin. The Grizzlies then host Centre College in a meet on Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m.
