Women’s Swimming Finishes Second at Liberal Arts Champ


Elsah, Ill. - The Franklin College women's swimming and diving team finished a strong second place during the 2016 Liberal Arts Championships at Principia College.

The Grizzlies won two of the seven events on Saturday. Overall, Franklin took top honors in four races. Franklin tallied 666.5 points to finish in second place in the team standings. Luther College won the team title with 823.5 points. University of Minnesota Morris (382 points), Coe College (355.5 points), and Illinois Institute of Technology (346 points) rounded out the top five.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of juniors Haley Blaich (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and Regina Solik (Clayton, Ind./Cascade) and sophomores Karlee Demsey (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville) and Amy McCormick (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) edged Luther to win the race (3:34.40). Solik's anchor leg rallied the Grizzlies to the .39-second victory.

McCormick earned a dominating 13-second triumph in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:37.78). Freshman Mackenzie Dwyer (Longmont, Colo./Skyline) finished in sixth place in the event (18:37.07). Juniors Ellen Grogg (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and Taylor Tichenor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) touched the wall in seventh and eighth places respectively.

Senior Shelby Conrad (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) recorded a runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.75). Dwyer added a seventh-place finish in the event (2:13.79).

Solik touched the wall in second place in the 100-yard freestyle (53.33 seconds), while Blaich followed closely behind in third place (53.93 seconds).

Sophomore Kaitlin Mans (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) earned a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.18).
