Elsah, Ill. - The Franklin College women's swimming and diving team posted eight top-five finishes on Friday during the 2016 Liberal Arts Championships at Principia College.
The Grizzlies stand in second place of 11 teams with 447.5 points. Luther College leads the meet heading into Saturday's final day of competition with 548.5 points. Coe College is in third place with 254.5 points and University of Minnesota Morris and Illinois Institute of Technology are tied for fourth place with 224 points.
Sophomore Amy McCormick (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) led a strong team effort in the 200-yard freestyle with an event victory (1:55.75). Junior Haley Blaich (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) finished in fourth place in the race (2:00.55). Junior Sarah Taylor (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central) followed closely behind in fifth place (2:01.03). Junior Lauren McCool (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) rounded out the strong performance in the event by the Grizzlies with a seventh-place finish (2:01.87).
McCool added a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:51.15). Senior Shelby Conrad (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) touched the wall in sixth place (4:54.35).
Franklin's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Blaich, McCool, McCormick, and Taylor took runner-up honors (8:01.96). The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Karlee Demsey (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville), Conrad, Mans, and Solik rounded out the team's strong finishes with a third-place performance (1:48.93).
Franklin concludes the Liberal Arts Championships on Saturday, February 13 with preliminary swims starting at 11 a.m. The finals are set to begin at 7 p.m.
