Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's and women's swimming and diving team combined to win 19 events to pick up dual meet victories over Illinois College and Illinois Institute of Technology to open the 2015-16 season on Saturday.
The men's swimming and diving team defeated Illinois College 177-53, while earning a 167-69 over Illinois Tech. Meanwhile, the women's swimming and diving team picked up a 173-28 win over Illinois College and a 144.5-88.5 triumph against Illinois Tech.
On the men's side, sophomore Sam Hall (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.84). He also ran the first leg on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:42.5). The 200-yard medley relay team of senior Joel Foreman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), juniors Artur Schneider (Zurich, Switzerland) and Bailey Willoughby (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) and sophomore Cody Porter (Kapolei, Hawaii/American Residence Academy) earned the event victory (1:39.43).
Hall concluded his strong performance by swimming a leg on the victorious 400-yard freestyle (3:21.57). Other relay members were senior Alex Bariyev (Ukraine), junior Nick Allen (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield), and freshman Rob Warren (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green). Warren had an event victory in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.07).
Sophomore Zach Daily (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville) won the 1,000-yard freestyle race by over 14 seconds (10:20.33).
Freshman Will Combs (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) set the school record to win the 1-meter diving competition, tallying 250.60 points based on the judge's scores.
Meanwhile, the women's team had three players win two races. Sophomore Amy McCormick (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) touched the wall first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. She won the shorter race in 2:00.9 before winning the longer event in 5:21.8.
Sophomore Karlee Demsey (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville) won the 50-yard freestyle (26.01 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.13).
Classmate Kaitlin Mans (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) rounded out the multiple event winners by winning in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.6) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.39).
Freshman Mackenzie Dwyer (Longmont, Colo/Skyline) swam a leg on the second place 200-yard medley relay (1:56.65). Other relay team members were juniors Regina Solik (Clayton, Ind./Cascade) and Laura Olivo (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) and Mans. Individually, Dwyer won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:13.15) and placed second to Demsey in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.37).
Franklin returns to action on Friday, October 30, at 6 p.m. when it travels to Manchester University for a dual meet.
