FRANKLIN, Ind. – On Saturday night, the Franklin College women's soccer team laid their claim to the undisputed Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season championship.
Maddie Fleet scored her 22nd and 23rd goals of the year and Taylor McDaniel potted an insurance marker in the second half, leading the Grizzlies to a 3-0 win over Anderson University in their regular season finale.
The win gives Franklin a 12-4 mark to close out the regular season, including their third straight 8-1 record in conference play. With the win, FC claims home field advantage throughout the upcoming HCAC Tournament.
The two teams battled tough in the first half, and chances were hard to come by as the two teams combined to allow just nine shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, the Grizzlies broke through when Fleet potted an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute to put Franklin out in front. Franklin's dangerous junior attacker added to the lead in the 65th minute, taking a pass from Hannah McIntosh and firing her second of the game into the net. The goal also extended Fleet's multi-goal game streak to four, during which she has buried 11 of her 23 goals.
McDaniel put the icing on the cake in the 71st minute with her fourth goal of the year, capping a breakthrough performance against a stingy Anderson defense that allowed just five goals total coming into Saturday night's game.
Shots on the night were 12-4 in favor of the Grizzlies. Allyson Saylor made five stops in net for the Ravens while Lexi Short needed just two stops to record her sixth clean sheet of the year.
Prior to Saturday night's game, the Franklin women's soccer program recognized its outstanding senior class. McIntosh, Jillian Lawrence, Clare Lenart, Jo List, Emily Stayer, Kelsey Brunsman, Bret Roberts and Abby Stayer were all playing in their final regular season game, and they'll have at least one more crack at the HCAC Championship that has eluded them over the last two years.
Franklin opens up the HCAC Championship on Wednesday night against these same Ravens. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
