TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Franklin College women's soccer team moved one step closer to claiming the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season championship for the second straight year on Wednesday night.
Junior Maddie Fleet scored twice in the opening eight minutes, giving her multiple goals for the third consecutive match. That proved to be enough as Franklin held on for a 2-1 victory, their third straight victory overall and 10th in their last 11 matches.
Fleet wasted no time getting the Grizzlies on the board, potting an unassisted tally just 1:47 into the match. Less than six minutes later, the Indianapolis-native doubled the Franklin lead when she took a Hannah McIntosh feed and buried her 21st goal of the year to make it a 2-0 game and give Fleet her third consecutive 20-goal campaign.
The Grizzlies continued to pepper the Rose-Hulman net in the first half, but were unable to add an insurance tally before the break. Franklin continued to maintain possession throughout the second half, but the hosts refused to go away quietly, cutting the lead in half in the 72nd minute.
Franklin's defense would limit the Engineers to just one shot attempt the rest of the way, a shot that was snuffed out by Lexi Short in the 73rd minute.
The Grizzlies dominated on the shot clock Wednesday night, out-shooting the hosts 18-6 and holding a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. Short made three stops to earn the win while Rose-Hulman's Carli Weinberg was brilliant at the other end, finishing with 11 saves.
Franklin can wrap up the league's regular season crown on Saturday night with a win over Anderson University on senior night as part of homecoming weekend. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
