HANOVER, Ind. – A matchup between the two teams picked as co-favorites to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) did not disappoint on Tuesday night, when the Franklin College women's soccer team hit the road for a showdown with the Hanover Panthers.
The two teams, who have met for the last three HCAC championships, battled in another low-scoring battle on Wednesday evening. But it was a late first half goal from Franklin's Jalynn Gorman that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Franklin win.
Franklin ran their winning streak to five matches and snapped a nine-match losing streak on Hanover's home field.
The Grizzlies came out firing, generating a pair of quality chances in the opening 20 minutes with Clare Lenart, Kelsey Brunsman and Hannah McIntosh firing the first three shots of the game. With time ticking down in the first half, the Grizzlies broke through for the game's lone goal when Gorman took a ball out wide on the goal line and popped it over the goalie for her first tally of the year.
The Grizzlies' defense locked it down in the second half, limiting the Panthers' high-powered attack to just two shots on goal. Each time she was tested, Franklin goalkeeper Lexi Short came up with a big save as she finished off her second clean sheet of the year.
The Grizzlies finished with a 16-9 advantage on the shot clock and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Lenart led all players with five shot attempts while Gorman and Brunsman tied for the team lead with two shots on goal each.
Franklin looks to keep their winning streak going on Saturday evening, when they host the Bluffton Beavers in their first HCAC home match of the year. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 5:00 p.m.
