FRANKLIN – The Franklin College women's soccer team wrapped up a difficult four-game stretch to open the year on Sunday afternoon against Illinois Wesleyan.
The Grizzlies battled the Titans evenly for 90 minutes, but one bad bounce midway through the first half gave led to the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Titan win.
Maddie Fleet led the Grizzlies with four shot attempts and a team-high two shots on goal. Jalynn Gorman finished with three shot attempts and Clare Lenart added two shots, but the Grizzlies were unable to find the back of the net for the second straight game.
The teams were dead-locked through the first 23 minutes of the game before a loose ball in the Franklin crease got past goalkeeper Lexi Short and found its way onto Cameron Hindel's foot where she found the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.
Less than three minutes later, Fleet had the Grizzlies' best chance of the first half but her shot was turned aside by Titan goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy.
The Grizzlies would spend more time in the Illinois Wesleyan zone in the second half, but each of their three shots on goal were turned aside by McCarthy.
Final shots were 18-12 in favor of the Titans. Lext Short turned aside eight shots in goal for the Grizzlies while McCarthy made five stops at the other end.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 19, when they return home to face DePauw University. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
