Women’s Soccer Advances to HCAC Championship Match on Saturday

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's soccer team scored within the first six minutes of each half to advance to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) championship match behind a 2-0 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening from Faught Stadium.

Franklin (12-2-4) struck first in the sixth minute when senior Danielle Owens (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) flicked a shot into the open net off a corner kick. Senior Kayla Dragstrem (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) drilled the corner kick to the far post. Owens got a touch on the ball to score her fourth goal of the season.

The Grizzlies held a 14-4 shot advantage for the match, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The two teams battled to a scoreless draw at Faught Stadium during the regular season.

The hosts got an insurance goal less than two minutes into the second half. Freshman Masey Bunn (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) buried a shot inside the right post from six yards out. Classmate Haley Lowe (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg)  beat a defender and dribbled along the left end line to set up Bunn's goal.

Franklin, the tournament's No. 2 seed, played in its first postseason match. It now advances to play at No. 1 seed Hanover College on Saturday, November 8 at 1 p.m. Admission to the match, set by the HCAC, is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students, and free for children under the age of 11 years old. All students, faculty, and staff members will receive free admission by showing their college identification.

Individually, freshman Hannah McIntosh (Dousman, Wis./Kettle Moraine), Bunn, and Dragstrem each attempted three shots for the Grizzlies.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Young (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) recorded her sixth shutout of the season. The defense held the Fightin' Engineers to two shots during each period.
