Franklin, Ind. - Junior Emma Hagist (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the Franklin College women's soccer team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 3-2 home victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday evening from Faught Stadium.
Franklin (5-2-2, 1-0 HCAC) scored in the first 10 minutes of each half. However, on each occasion, MSJ (3-7, 0-1 HCAC) would respond with goals within a minute in the match.
Senior Kayla Dragstrem (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) scored her second goal of the season when she converted a free kick in the eighth minute. The visitors tied the match a minute later on a goal by Taylor Clark.
In the second half, junior Amy Jordan (Greenwood, Ind./Irvington Prep Academy) put the Grizzlies ahead 2-1 in the 47th minute. Freshman Clare Lenart (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) set up the goal with a long run down the right side of the field.
However, less than a minute later, MSJ squared the match as Cassandra Howell scored an unassisted goal.
Later, Hagist found the back of the net for the first time this fall after Lenart dribbled along the left end line. Her pass to the middle of the goal area found Hagist for the game-winning goal.
Franklin held a 14-7 shot advantage for the match, including eight shots in the second half. The team also recorded 12 corner kicks.
The Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.
