SWEET BRIAR, Va. – On Sunday (Mar. 24) afternoon, the Franklin College women's lacrosse team continued a three-game road swing with a matchup against Sweet Briar College.
The Grizzlies (0-3) were short-handed heading into the game with five regulars missing from the lineup. Franklin put up a fight against the Vixens (2-9), but fell victim to a long scoring drought in the first half allowing the hosts to claim a 20-6 win.
The Vixens came out and potted three goals in the opening 10 minutes to take the early lead. Franklin appeared to flip momentum as the game approached the mid-way part of the first half with back-to-back goals from Abbey Voss and Sam Collier cutting the Vixen lead to one with 16:22 left in the half.
But the game's deciding stretch came over a 10-minute period following Collier's goal. Sweet Briar scored the next eight goals before Voss and Shelbi Hunter netted back-to-back goals late in the half. After 30 minutes of play, the hosts held a 13-4 lead.
Brooke Hughes and Haley Ash netted goals early in the second half, but that was all the scoring Franklin could muster as the Vixens would keep them off the scoreboard for the final 20 minutes of play.
Voss led the Grizzlies with five shot attempts and tied with Ash for most shots on goal with four each. Ash would add 10 draw controls to lead the team while Collie topped the Grizzlies with five ground balls. Madeleine Correll and Collier each caused three turnovers, trying for the team lead. In goal, Courtney Jones turned aside 11 Vixen shots.
Franklin closed out their spring break trip on Tuesday (Mar. 26), heading to Ferrum, Va. For a meeting with the Panthers of Ferrum College. The opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
