RICHMOND, Ind. – The Franklin College women's lacrosse team opened their final week of regular season play on Wednesday (Apr. 25) night, taking on Earlham College in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) contest.
The Grizzlies (3-8, 3-7 ORLC) fell behind early and weren't able to overcome, dropping a 22-13 decision to the Quakers (4-11, 3-7 ORLC). Abby Stayer led the Grizzlies with five goals on the night while Sam Collier collected her first career hat trick. Haley Ash and Abbey Voss netted two goals each for Franklin.
Earlham jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before newcomer Lexi Blackburn got the Grizzlies on the board with 24:03 to go in the opening half. But Earlham would follow up with four straight goals and held a 10-2 lead with just under 13 minutes to go in the opening half. Stayer would add a pair of goals and Ash would pot her first of the half with 1:09 to play, but Franklin headed into the half down 12-5.
Back-to-back goals from Voss right out of the half and the first marker of the night from Collier brought the Grizzlies to within six at 14-8 with 19:12 to go in the game. But that was as close as the Grizzlies would get as Earlham would net seven of the next eight goals to put the game out of reach.
Courtney Jones made 17 saves in goal for the Grizzlies, coming one save shy of a season-high. The freshman goalkeeper also led the Grizzlies with five ground balls recorded. Stayer topped the Grizzlies with 11 draw controls, followed by five from Voss.
Franklin wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Apr. 28) afternoon, taking on the Tomcats of Thiel College. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
