FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College women's lacrosse team played their final home game of the regular season on Saturday (Apr. 21) afternoon, taking on the Westminster College Titans on senior day at Faught Stadium.
The Grizzlies (3-7, 3-6 ORLC) and Titans (4-7, 4-4 ORLC) battled in a high-scoring contest with the teams trading goals all afternoon long. But the Grizzlies would fall just short in their home finale, dropping a 20-17 contest.
Senior Jess Silva potted a team-high six goals and added a pair of assists for Franklin. Morgan McIntosh netted four goals and added a team-high four assists while Brooke Hughes added a hat trick for the Grizzlies.
Hughes opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game and Abby Stayer made it 2-1 Franklin with 21:54 to go in the half. The Titans answered with three straight goals to take their first lead of the afternoon, but back-to-back goals from Stayer and Silva evened things up at 4-4 with 16:40 to go in the first half.
But the Grizzlies were unable to crack Westminster goalie Matalyn Holland the rest of the half, scoring just once over the rest of the half. After 30 minutes, Westminster held an 8-5 lead.
Silva netted the Grizzlies' first three goals of the second half, but Westminster had an answer each time and with 16:37 to go, the Titans held an 11-8 lead. But four straight Titan goals from Bria Braddock over the next two minutes stretched the guest's lead to 15-8 with 14:39 left.
Franklin would answer would three straight goals to get within four and after a Silva goal with 6:04 to play, the Grizzlies were within striking distance at 18-15. But time would run out on the home team as Franklin was unable to complete the comeback.
Silva led all Grizzlies with 12 shots on goal and was followed by nine from McIntosh and seven from Stayer. In goal, Courtney Jones made 15 stops for the Grizzlies and led all Franklin players with six ground balls collected.
Franklin hits the road on Wednesday (Apr. 25) night, heading to Richmond, Ind. for an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference showdown with Earlham College. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
