INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After a strong collegiate debut on Sunday afternoon, Franklin College freshman guard Karlee Welding was named the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Player of the Week for women's basketball when the league announced its weekly league award winners on Monday.
The Indianapolis-native played an efficient game in Sunday's win over Mount Mary, going eight-for-nine from the field and a perfect two-for-two from three-point range for a game-high 18 points. Additionally, Welding handed out a game-high five assists and recorded two of the Grizzlies' 17 steals in just 14 minutes of action. Franklin rolled to a 92-16 win over Mount Mary, setting a new single-game program record for fewest points allowed in a contest.
Welding becomes the first Grizzly to earn women's basketball player of the week from the HCAC since Katie Brewer back on Dec. 7, 2015.
The Grizzly women's basketball team hits the road this coming weekend to start a five-game road trip, starting on Saturday (Nov. 17) afternoon when they take on Carnegie Mellon in the opening game of the 2018 Nan Nichols Classic, hosted by Wooster College. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
