Women’s Basketball Team Hangs On For First Round Win

HANOVER, Ind. (Feb. 21, 2017) – Powered by three players in double figures, the Franklin College women's basketball team held on for a thrilling 65-64 win at Hanover College in Tuesday night's opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

With the win, the fifth-seeded Grizzlies (14-11) advance to Friday's semifinals against No. 1 seed tournament-host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (22-3). Tip-off is 6 p.m.

Franklin received double-digit scoring performances from seniors Emily Alfrey and Mandy Fisher and junior Riley Achenbach in knocking off the No. 4 seed Panthers.

Alfrey scored a team-high 17 points on 7 of 16 shooting from the field. She was 3 of 4 on three-point attempts and had a team-high-tying five rebounds.

Achenbach poured in 15 points for the Grizzlies and made 3 of 9 three-point attempts. She also had four rebounds and four assists.

Fisher, meanwhile, contributed 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. All of her rebounds were on the offensive end.

Junior Kelsey Smith added seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Grizzlies, while senior teammate Sarah Taylor had four points, one assist and one steal.

For Hanover, Allison Nash was the only player in double figures with 17 points. Audrey Wetzel had nine, and Katie Hartman and Claire Cromer had eight apiece.
