Combs, Coffman Lay Claim to Weekly Conference Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Franklin College senior diver Will Combs and sophomore swimmer Courtnee Coffman were recognized by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) on Tuesday (Jan. 15) morning, when the league announced its first swimmer and diver of the week awards of 2019.

Combs claimed his fifth diver of the week award with a strong performance on the board at the Centre College Colonel Classic. The Indianapolis, Ind.-native racked up 232.80 points on six dives, taking first place among all male divers by more than 100 points. Franklin rallied from down 50 points after day one to win the Colonel Classic with 643 total points, 62 points better than second place.

As for Coffman, she collected her first career swimmer of the week award after a stellar showing in individual races and as part of four winning relays. Her first individual win came in the 50-meter freestyle, where she set a new pool record with 24.36 seconds, winning the event by more than one second. Later in the weekend, the New Palestine, Ind.-native claimed the top spot in the 100-meter freestyle, rolling to first place with a time of 53.72 seconds. Additionally, she took third in the 100-meter backstroke at 1:02.62.

In the relay races, Coffman swam the opening leg of Franklin's winning 200-freestyle, 400-freestyle and 800-freestyle teams. She also anchored the winning 400-medley relay squad, helping the Grizzly women to a landslide win over four other teams at the Colonel Classic.
