WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Franklin College softball team opened up the 2019 season on Friday (Feb. 22) night, making the jaunt north for a meeting with Indiana Tech at Grand Park.
The Grizzlies (0-1) fell behind early but were able to climb back into the game with big third and fourth innings. But the Warrior (2-1) bats would have the final say in the outcome of this game, as Franklin dropped a 15-10 decision.
Down by five entering their half of the third, the Grizzly bats came to life and helped cut into the Warrior lead. With two outs and a runner on first, Monica Collins brought home Franklin's first run of the game with a triple to center, scoring Sydney Logsdon. One batter later, Collins came in on a bunt single by Lexi Gaffney, with Gaffney scoring later in the inning on a Shelby Mager RBI single that made it a 5-3 game.
The bottom of the third produced four more Warrior runs, but Franklin would bounce back with a big fourth inning to tie the game. Danielle Wyse singled home Justice Carmichael two batters into the inning and was followed by Taylor Bounin's RBI single and a two-run base hit for Collins. With just one out and a pair of runners on, the Grizzlies took advantage of a Warrior error to plate Collins and Logsdon, evening the game up at 9-9 after 3.5 innings.
But the Warriors halted Franklin's momentum in their half of the fourth, tacking on three more runs before adding one more in the fifth. Franklin cut the deficit to 13-10 in the top of the sixth when Collins swiped home on a double steal attempt, but the Grizzlies couldn't add any more runs in their final at-bat of the night.
Collins finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the way for the Franklin offense. Alisha Burch (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing four hits, three walks and striking out three over 3.2 innings of work.
Franklin will have some time off to get ready for the 2019 home opener, which takes place on Mar. 6 with two games against Berea College. First pitch from Behrens Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
