Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team earned a non-conference sweep of Adrian College, winning 8-0 in six innings and 5-4 in the second game on Friday afternoon at Behrens Field.
The Grizzlies (9-5) scored four runs in the seventh inning in the second game after trailing 4-1 to enter the frame.
Freshman Monica Collins (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) started the rally by drawing a bases-loaded walk. A few batters later, junior Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) to cut the deficit to 4-3. With two outs, senior Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) hit a walkoff double to score Collins and the eventual winning run junior Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers).
Adrian broke a 1-1 tie in the second game with three runs in the seventh inning behind three straight hits. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. However, junior Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) connected on her second home run of the season to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Dani Speas (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) earned her first collegiate victory after retiring the only batter she faced in the seventh inning to hit into a double play.
Senior Bri McClellan (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) scattered two hits in five innings in a no-decision pitching effort.
In the opener, the Grizzlies pushed across one run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 advantage. Suiters hit her first home run of the season in the first inning. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth inning following a two-run double by sophomore Grace Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community). Suiters and Lalioff scored on the base hit.
One inning later, Suiters drew a bases-loaded walk to score freshman Taylor Bounin (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) to increase the margin to 7-0. Struewing followed with a single to score sophomore Morgan Burch (Coatesville, Ind./Cascade) to end the contest.
Sophomore Olivia Paszek (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) struck out five batters and allowed three hits in the shutout victory. The left-handed pitcher improved to 7-1 in the circle this spring.
Bounin led Franklin's offensive attack with two hits and two runs scored. Paszek and Suiters each added two runs batted in.
Franklin opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play against Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m. from Behrens Field. Live statistics of both games will be available.
