Softball Splits at Transylvania

Lexington, Ky. - The Franklin College softball team earned a doubleheader split at Transylvania University, winning the opener 10-5 before losing the second game 5-4 on Thursday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play.

In the opener, the Grizzlies (19-17, 6-8 HCAC) took advantage of five Transylvania errors over the first two innings to jump out to a 6-1 lead. The visitors scored two runs in the first inning on a single by freshman Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran).

The team plated four more runs an inning later. Sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) gave Franklin a 5-0 advantage with a two-run double. Stuewing would later score on a single by Suiters.

The lead grew to 9-2 in the fourth inning. Freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) hit a two-run double for the big hit in the frame. Freshman Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) and sophomore Michelle Murphy (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) scored on Gregory's base hit.

Transylvania (12-22, 6-8 HCAC) scored three times in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 9-5. After consecutive base hits to open up the bottom of the sixth inning for the Pioneers, freshman Bailey Lindamood (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) came in relief and shut the door on a potential rally. She recorded her first save of the season.

Sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) struck out three batters in five innings to pick up the victory. She improved to 12-7 on the season.

Struewing led Franklin's 11-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored. Suiters also went 2-for-4 and had three RBI in the game one victory. Lalioff, Gregory and Hanna each recorded multiple-hit efforts in the opener.

In the second game, Transylvania scored three runs in the seventh inning to rally past Franklin 5-4. The Grizzlies plated three runs in the second inning and led 4-0 until a two-run home run by Transylvania in the sixth inning.
