Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College softball team recorded its first sweep in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play, defeating Defiance College 10-2 in five innings and 2-1 on Saturday from Behrens Field on Senior Day.
Franklin (17-15, 5-7 HCAC) recorded 14 hits and scored during each of its final four at bats to win the opener. The Grizzlies tied the contest at 2-2 behind a two-run second inning. A run-scoring single by freshman Jessica Thom (Mooresville, Ind./Monrovia) plated freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) for the second run of the inning.
Franklin took a 3-2 advantage an inning later on a single by freshman Megan Lalioff (Fishers, Ind./Fishers). Later, the margin grew to four runs, 6-2, after a bases-clearing single from Thom.
The Grizzlies took advantage of two costly errors to score their first six runs of the contest.
In the fourth inning, sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) hit a sacrifice fly that plated freshman Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie). The team scored three times in the fifth inning as freshman Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran), junior Jessica Ayers (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) and Farr each recorded an RBI.
In the second game, Lalioff broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vanosdol, who came in relief in the top of the sixth inning, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. A ground ball to freshman Shannon Farr (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) at third base ended the game.
Franklin took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on double from Lalioff. The base hit scored sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood), who singled with two outs earlier in the inning.
Defiance (6-19, 2-12 HCAC) tied the game in the sixth inning on a single by Kali Campbell off Franklin freshman starting pitcher Bailey Lindamood (Fishers, Ind./Fishers).
The Grizzlies answered with Lalioff's single in the sixth inning to break the tie.
Individually, Lalioff led the offensive attack by collecting five hits and driving in three runs. She went 3-for-3 and had two RBI in the second game. Struewing was 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the opener. Thom drove in five runs and was 3-for-3 in the first contest.
Vanosdol recorded pitching victories in both games, highlighted by a complete-game effort in the first game. She did not allow a run and got the final five outs to complete the sweep.
