Softball Concludes Road Swing with Split at Olivet
Olivet, Mich. - The Franklin College softball team wrapped up its 10-game road swing with a doubleheader split in non-conference action at Olivet College on Sunday. The Grizzlies lost the opener 2-1 in eight innings before picking up a 7-4 victory in the second contest.
Franklin (14-12) broke a 4-4 tie with a three-run sixth inning in the second game. Sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) put the visitors ahead 5-4 with a two-out run-scoring single. The base hit plated junior Jessica Ayers (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort). A fielding error allowed Vanosdol to score the second run of the inning. Freshman Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) later scored in the frame when another ground ball was misplayed.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a three-run third inning. A failed pickoff attempt by Olivet allowed Blevins to score the game's first run in the second inning. An inning later, Ayers gave Franklin a 2-0 lead on a single that scored freshman Shannon Farr (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central). Ayers would score on a single from Blevins. The Grizzlies took a 4-0 lead on a double by freshman Baylea Suiters (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran).
Olivet (14-5) quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to trim the deficit to one run, 4-3. The Comets squared the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning on a two-out single.
Then, Franklin scored three times in the sixth inning.
Freshman Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) earned her first collegiate win in the complete-game effort. She now stands 1-1 on the season.
In the opener, Olivet rallied from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 victory in eight innings. Freshman Jeana Gregory (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) scored on a sacrifice fly by Suiters in the fourth inning. The hosts quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
The game would remain tied until Olivet's Ashley Milheim got a two-out single for the game-winning hit in the eighth inning.
Ayers led Franklin's offensive attack with a pair of multiple-hit performances. Blevins went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the second game. Sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) and Gregory each had two hits in the victory.
