Robinson Wins Debut Race, Grizzlies earn Two Runner-Up FInishes at Home Meet

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – The Franklin College cross country teams hit the course for the first time in 2017 on Saturday morning, competing in the Sodexo Grizzly Invitational at the Blue River Cross Country course.

The season debut proved to be a successful one, with freshman Krista Robinson taking first place in the women's 5K race in her first collegiate race. Both teams placed three runners in the top-10 in each race on their way to runner-up finishes.

Greenwood, Ind.-native Robinson bolted out to an early lead and never looked back for the FC women, clocking in at a time of 20:26.34, more than five seconds better than second place. She wasn't alone in the top-10 as senior Rachel Bowden (21:30.28) and freshman Grace Esterline (22:19.77) took seventh and 10th places, respectively.

Junior Monica Dougherty (14th/23:08.14), junior Kelsey Bowling (19th/25:07.80), freshman Madeleine Correll (23rd/25:24.70) and sophomore Jayla Callens (27th/28:48.20) rounded out the times for the Griz.

The FC men were paced by sophomore and reigning HCAC Freshman of the Year Clayton Brumfield. The sophomore turned in a fifth place finish in the men's 5K race with a time of 16:37.98. Right on his heels was sophomore Blaine Conners, who finished one spot back in sixth place after breaking the tape with a time of 16:46.28.

Junior Heath Deugan cracked the top-10 after clocking in at a pace of 17:05.39 to take ninth place. Freshman Chris Graham fell just outside of the top-10, earning a 12th place finish with a time of 17:14.24.

Freshman Logan Vandermark (17th/18:06.10), junior J.T. Sargent (19th/18:11.22), freshman Reed Sauter (28th/19:11.94), sophomore Adam Rector (29th/19:20.35), sophomore Chris Ott (35th/20:11.57), sophomore Alex Creamer (36th/20:24.48) and sophomore Sean Groves (38th/21:44.13) rounded out the times for Franklin.

Next up for the Grizzlies is a trip to West Lafayette, Ind. On Sept. 15 for the Indiana Intercollegiate Meets. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
