Hanover, Ind. - Franklin College cross country runner Clayton Brumfield was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's (HCAC) 2016 Freshman of the Year after an eighth-place finish at this year's league championships.
Brumfield also earned All-HCAC honors after covering Hanover College's 8-kilometer course in 27:20.62 on Saturday. He becomes the third Franklin men's cross country runner to earn the conference's Freshman of the Year Award, joining Josh Wagner (2003) and Troy Pryor (2005).
Sophomore J.T. Sargent recorded a 45th-place finish (30:20.8) for the Grizzlies, while senior Evan Vernon followed closely in 51st place (30:32.18). Sophomore Heath Deugan and freshman Adam Rector finished 53rd and 54th place respectively to round out the team's balanced performance.
The Grizzlies tallied 167 points to place seventh in the championship meet.
Franklin is scheduled to compete in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes regional meet on Saturday, November 5 at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
