OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - The Franklin men's tennis team began their brief fall schedule on Friday (Aug. 31) night, heading north to take on Division II opponent Oakland City University.
The Grizzlies (1-0) took care of business in their season opener, handing the Mighty Oaks (0-1) an 8-1 defeat in both team's season-opening showdowns.
Franklin got things started off with a pair of wins in doubles play, starting with an 8-4 win from Blake Amonett and Alexnder Pollard at the No. 2 doubles spot. Josh Stewart and Noah Sturgeon closed out doubles play with an 8-2 takedown of Carlos Stewart and Trent Bowman at the No. 3 doubles spot.
The action shifted to singles play, where Franklin closed out the match by sweeping all six matches. Amonett racked up his second point of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup. Jacob Zachary came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot while Stewart secured a win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position.
Pollard picked up a win in the fourth spot when his opponent retired. Freshman Matt Stone earned his first collegiate win with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the five-spot while fellow freshman Matt Leming closed out the night with a 6-3, 6-1 win to earn his first career singles victory.
The Grizzlies play their first home match of the fall on Saturday (Sept. 1), taking on Midway University at Mickel-Hoover Tennis Courts in Franklin. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
