The Franklin College men's and women's swim teams combined to win the Colonel Classic Invitational at Centre College over the weekend. Franklin won the men's meet by 144 points while the women finished in a close second to host Centre College. The two-day event came on the heels of a long and tenuous winter training regimen for the Grizzlies.
The Franklin men started the meet off Friday night by winning the opening 200 freestyle relay by a 1.3 second margin. The relay consisted of Jordan Cermak (Greenfield, IN), Nick Allen (Plainfield, IN), Bailey Willoughby (Greenfield, IN), and Artur Schneider (Zurich, Switzerland). Schneider then went on to win the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:58.27. In the women's 200 individual medley, Franklin's Cady Mehringer (Jasper, IN) came from behind to win in a time of 2:18.92. Mehringer and Schneider wrapped up the first night of competition by helping their respective teams sweep the 400 medley relays. Schneider led off the men's 400 medley relay in a new pool record time as the lead-off backstroke leg. The four-member relay went on to break the overall pool record and defeated their nearest competitors by nearly eight seconds. Schneider was joined by Jack Heim (Prospect, KY), Willoughby and Allen. Mehringer joined Karlee Demsey (Jeffersonville, IN), Kaitlin Mans (Louisville, KY) and Regina Solik (Clayton, IN) to win the women's event by nearly five seconds.
On Saturday morning, Demsey, Mans, Mehringer and Solik began where they left off on Friday by winning the 200 medley relay and starting the day off right. Then, Franklin fell behind slightly in the scoring until the Grizzlies rattled off five straight event wins. Nick Allen started the streak by winning the 200 freestyle and was followed by Heim and Mans, who won the men's and women's 100 breaststroke, respectively. Then, Schneider and Demsey swept the men's and women's 100 backstroke events.
The afternoon session on Saturday brought more wins for the Grizzlies from familiar faces. Amy McCormick (Floyds Knobs, IN) kicked the afternoon off by winning the mile (1,650 yard freestyle), and like the 100 backstroke earlier in the meet, the Grizzlies swept the 200 backstroke in the afternoon; Schneider winning for the men and Mackenize Dwyer (Longmont, CO) winning for the women. Mans doubled up in breaststroke by winning the 200 yard breaststroke as well. In the final event of the weekend, the Franklin men capped off the meet by bookending the relays and winning the 400 freestyle relay. The team of James Hone (Victoria, Australia), Allen, Willoughby, and Schneider won by more than seven seconds and narrowly missed the pool record.
The final combined scores of the meet were: Franklin College 1204, Centre College 1189, Asbury University 745, Manchester University 337.
