HCAC Releases Preseason Coaches Poll; FC Men's Soccer Picked to Finish Eighth

GREENWOOD, Ind. – With a little less than three weeks before their season-opening match, the Franklin men's soccer team is gearing up for the start of a new era in Grizzly soccer.

Under the guidance of former Franklin men's soccer player and first year head coach Cody Graman, the Grizzlies have been picked to finish eighth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) by the league's coaches.

A total of 12 Grizzlies return for the first year under Graman, which includes senior midfielder and 2016 HCAC Honorable Mention selection Mason Krupa, as well as last year's leading goal scorer in junior midfielder Luke Oliver.

Also back in tow for the Griz is senior goalkeeper Garrett Belden, who appeared in 16 games between the pipes one year ago. Two starting defenders are also back in the fold in the form of Ben Tierney and Trey Floyd, who will look to anchor the team's back four.

Transylvania just edged out Rose-Hulman for the top spot in the preseason poll. The Pioneers earned 88 points and six first place votes to hold down the number one spot while Rose-Hulman garnered 85 points and the final four first place votes.

Hanover (75 pts), Mt. St. Joseph (59 pts) and Manchester (53 pts) round out the top half of the table. Earlham (47 pts) and Anderson (46 pts) slot in just ahead of the Grizzlies and their 42 points. Defiance (31 pts) and Bluffton (24 pts) round out the rest of the poll.

Franklin opens up the 2017 season on their home turf on Friday, Sept. 1 against Wabash. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 4:00 p.m.
