Seymour, Ind. - Sophomore Sam Godby (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) carded a 76-stroke score led the Franklin College men's golf team during the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships on Saturday from Shadowood Golf Course.
The Grizzlies stand in sixth place of the 72-hole tournament after shooting a 317 team score. Franklin trails fifth-place Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by 11 strokes.
Godby is tied for ninth place individually and was one of two Franklin players to shoot in the 70s on Saturday. Sophomore Spencer Portish (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) recorded a 79-stroke score and is tied for 24th place.
Junior Sam Pollock (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) carded an 80-stroke score, while classmate Jack Knue (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) added an 82-stroke score. Freshman Jonas Carmichael (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood) rounded out the performers by also carding an 82 on Saturday.
Sunday's second round begins at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude the first weekend of the HCAC Men's Golf Championships. The final two rounds will be completed from April 30 through May 1 at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash, Indiana.
