Baseball Splits With Defiance

FRANKLIN, Ind. (April 8, 2017)- The Franklin College baseball team was able to win game two of a doubleheader with Defiance College. The team lost game one before taking game two 12-4.

Game 1: Defiance- 27, Franklin-10

An offensive explosion led Defiance to a game one victory. Franklin was led offensively by juniors Jackson Freed and Frank Podkul. Freed recorded three hits and drove in two runs. Podkul connected for a three run home run, his fourth of the season. Sophomore Jordan Clark also drove in two runs.

Game 2: Franklin- 12, Defiance- 4

After scoring 10 runs in game one, the bats remained hot for game two. Franklin got on the board in the bottom of the firs inning. Freshman Nick Wright blasted a three run home run to open up a 4-0 Franklin lead.

After adding a run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Freed, the Grizzlies extended their lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning. Freshman Jarrod Smith recorded a sacrifice fly of his own. Sophomore shortstop Sam Claycamp followed with a two run home run, his sixth of the season. 

The offense continued to attack, adding on four more runs in the seventh inning. Claycamp doubled to drive in two more runs. Clark also drove in a run with a double.

The run support would be plenty for starting pitcher senior Jacob McMain. McMain worked six innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out seven. Junior Christian Sullivan relieved McMain in the seventh with team leading 8-4. Sullivan worked three scoreless innings while striking out four to earn his first save of the season.

Claycamp, Podkul, Wright, and junior Ryan Erlandson all recorded multiple hits in the triumph. Claycamp finished both games with six total hits with four runs batted in.

The teams conclude the series with a single game tomorrow at noon from John P. McDowell Field.
