Baseball Team Blasts Way to Second Straight Win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2017) – On the strength of 21 hits, the Franklin College baseball team rolled to a 19-2 win Monday afternoon against Alma College in Winter Haven, Fla.

The win was the second straight for the Grizzlies (2-1), who are winding down a four-game Florida trip. They play their final game of the series at 11 a.m. tomorrow against St. Mary's (Minn.).

Against Alma (0-4), the Grizzlies jumped to a 2-0 lead in the the top of the first inning and cruised the rest of the way. They scored seven runs in both the fifth and seventh innings and didn't surrender a run until the bottom of the eighth.

On the day, Franklin combined for nine extra-base hits, including home runs by junior Frank Podkul, freshman Jarrod Smith and freshman Tommy Waites. Junior Jackson Freed belted three doubles.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Clark picked up the win for the Grizzlies. He struck out 10 batters and gave up only three hits in six innings of work.

At the plate, Podkul was 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Freshman Nick Wright was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Senior Jacob Troxell was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Freed was 3 of 4.

Smith, Waites, Troxell and sophomore Sam Claycamp drove in a pair of runs each for the Grizzlies.
