Baseball Completes Series Sweep over Defiance
Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team recorded 33 hits and scored double digit runs in completing its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) series sweep over Defiance on Saturday from John P. McDowell Field. The Grizzlies won the opener 16-4 before earning a 10-3 triumph in the second contest.
Franklin (22-14, 13-9 HCAC) scored 12 runs between the third and sixth innings to win the opener. The Grizzlies plated five runs in the sixth inning. Junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) hit a three-run home run as part of the sixth inning. He is tied for the team-lead with five homers for the season.
Leading 3-2 in the third inning, freshman Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) plated sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncali) with a single to start a three-run frame. Junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) drove in two runs with a double to give the team a 5-2 lead.
An inning later, the first six batters reached safely for Franklin. Senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) started a four-run inning with a single that scored junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo). Freshman Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the team a 5-2 advantage. Sophomore Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) chipped in with a run-scoring single. Freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) capped the scoring with a single.
Senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) and Ardizzone each recorded run-scoring singles before Ison's three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Ardizzone led the 18-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in. Brock and WIndler each recorded three hits. All nine positional starters recorded at least one hit in the opener. DuBois scored three runs.
In the second game, Franklin scored three times each in the sixth and eighth innings. Shipley and Ison each had three-hit performances. Brock and Windler also tallied multiple-hit efforts.
Windler's five hits bring him within one hit from tying Nick Stoia's career 232 school mark.
Senior Chris Hoopingarner (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) picked up his sixth victory of the season in the opener. He allowed two earned runs in six innings. Junior Lincoln Jones (Ramsey, Ind./North Harrison) tossed three innings to record his first save of the season.
Sophomore Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) struck out eight batters over eight innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Franklin returns to action on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. when it travels to Thomas More College for a non-conference match up.
