Lexington, Ky. - The Franklin College baseball team moved into fourth place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) standings by winning its third road league series of the season on Saturday. The Grizzlies split a doubleheader at Transylvania University, winning the opener 13-7 and losing the second game 5-2.
Franklin (19-13, 10-8 HCAC) scored nine times over the first two innings to seize control of the contest. The team recorded 18 hits, matching its previous season high set earlier this week against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
A run-scoring single by freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) got the scoring started in the first inning by plating junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville). Later, junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) drove in senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) and Shipley for a quick 3-0 advantage.
The Grizzlies scored six times in the second inning. Shipley hit a two-run triple that scored sophomore Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and Brock. Windler added a run-scoring single. A passed ball allowed Windler to score. Senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) and freshman Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) each added a single to score a run in the frame.
Transylvania (15-16, 9-8 HCAC) cut the deficit to 10-5 after scoring three runs in the second and plating two more runs in the fifth inning.
Franklin's lead was trimmed to 11-7 following a two-run seventh inning. However, the visitors quickly responded by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. DeJesus plated sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Ardizzone) with a single. Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) later scored on a base hit from Brock.
Sophomore starting pitcher Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) picked up the victory, allowing four earned runs in 6.2 innings. The left hander improved to 5-3 on the season. Classmate Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to secure the victory.
In the second game, Transylvania broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run eighth inning. Franklin broke a scoreless game in the fourth inning on a single by Ardizzone that scored Windler. The Pioneers answered with a two-run fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. A run-scoring single by Shipley in the fifth inning tied the game.
Individually, Brock led the offensive attack with four hits on the day. He tallied three hits and scored two runs from the leadoff spot in the batting order in the first game. Shipley drove in four runs in the two games. Windler tallied four hits on the afternoon, while Frey had three RBI in the first game. DuBois recorded three hits in the opener. DeJesus and Simpkins also recorded multiple-hit efforts in the game one victory.
Franklin returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 at 6 p.m. when it plays Hanover College from Victory Field in Indianapolis. Admission to the game is $5.
