Franklin, Ind. - Juniors Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) and Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) combined for six hits and six runs batted in during Franklin College's 10-7 win in the second game of a doubleheader split with Manchester University on Saturday from John P. McDowell Field. The Spartans won the opener 6-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action.
Franklin (16-12, 7-7 HCAC) rallied from a 3-0 first-inning deficit in the second game to tie the game on a two-run home run from junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) in the third inning. The homer marked the third long ball of the season for Ison.
The Grizzlies took their first lead of the series an inning later on a bases-clearing double by Frey. The lead grew to 10-3 behind a four-run fifth inning. Brock started the scoring in the frame with a double to plate sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North). A Manchester error allowed sophomore Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) to score. Frey drove in his fourth run of the game with a single to score Brock for the third run of the inning. A sacrifice fly from senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) plated freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) to cap the Franklin scoring.
Junior starting pitcher Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) struck out 10 batters in 8.1 innings. The right hander improved to 3-3 on the season and has won his last three starts.
Sophomore Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) recorded his first save of the season. He entered the game after the Spartans had plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning and had the potential game-tying run at the plate. Brown struck out Justin Miller in the only batter he faced to secure the victory.
Individually, Brock and Frey each tallied three of the team's 12 hits. Brock scored two runs and drove in a pair of runs, while Frey had four RBI in the game. Ison added two hits in the victory.
In the opener, Manchester (17-10, 11-3 HCAC) plated two runs in the second and third innings to build a 4-1 lead. The visitors recorded 12 hits in the game.
Trailing 2-0 in the second inning, a sacrifice fly from DuBois scored Frey after he singled to begin the frame. Frey later added a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to trim Manchester lead to 6-2. Frey recorded two hits in the contest.
On the day, Frey had five hits and drove in five runs.
Franklin returns to action on Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in HCAC play from John P. McDowell Field.
