Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team lost its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) series opener 12-4 to league-leading Manchester University on Friday at John P. McDowell Field.
Manchester (16-9, 10-2 HCAC) broke the game open with a six-run third inning to build a 7-0 lead.
Senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) cut the deficit to 8-2 with a two-run single in the fifth inning. However, the Spartans plated two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to hold a 12-2 lead.
Franklin (15-11, 6-6 HCAC) capped the scoring with two runs in the ninth inning.
Windler went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead the offensive attack. Junior Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo), senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn), freshmen Damon DeJesus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Blackhawk Christian) and Mitchell Sorrells (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) each recorded one hit.
Manchester's Dan Maringer and Tailur Szarenski each led the Spartans with three hits.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, April 12 at noon when the two teams conclude the three-game weekend series with a doubleheader. Live statistics of both games will be available here.
