Ninth-Inning Rallies Fall Short in Baseball Doubleheader Sweep to Anderson
Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team stranded the potential game-tying run at third base in two one-run losses to Anderson University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday from John P. McDowell Field. The Grizzlies dropped the opener 3-2 before falling 12-11 in the second contest.
Franklin (13-10, 4-5 HCAC) cut a 3-1 deficit to one run in the opener on a single from junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) in the eighth inning. Ison connected on his second home run of the season in the fifth inning that tied the game at 1-1.
In the ninth inning, junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) doubled with one out to put the potential game-tying run into scoring position. A hit batter and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs for sophomore Joe Ardizzone (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli). Anderson closer Nick Nunez got Ardizzone to line out to secure the 3-2 victory for the Ravens.
In the second game, Anderson scored five times in the fourth and added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to build an 11-3 lead. The margin grew to 12-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Ison drew a bases-loaded walk to start a furious comeback effort. Freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) followed by getting hit by a pitch to trim the lead to 12-5. A bases-loaded walk to sophomore Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) continued the rally.
Senior Rickey DuBois (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) followed with a run-scoring single to plate Ison and bring Franklin within 12-7. Freshman Mitchell Sorrells (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) slapped a two-run single to score the sixth run of the inning. A single by Brock loaded the bases with the hosts trailing 12-9. After a strikeout for the second out in the inning, Windler plated two runs with a single and put the potential game-tying run at third base. Windler would steal second to get the potential game-winning run in scoring position. However, Anderson's Lane Hanzel got Ardizzone to line out to end the rally. The Grizzlies scored eight runs in the frame.
Individually, Brock had five hits in the two games, highlighted by a three-hit effort in the second game. Windler had two hits and drove in four runs in the second game. He hit his team-leading fifth home run as part of a three-run first inning. Ison went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the opener.
