Baseball Splits Games with No. 21-Ranked Augustana
Winter Haven, Fla. - The Franklin College baseball team split a doubleheader against No. 21-ranked Augustana College (Ill.), losing the opener 8-2 before earning a 7-3 victory in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon from Winter Haven, Florida.
Sophomore Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) retired the last 14 batters in tossing a seven-inning, complete-game victory. The left hander struck out six batters and allowed one earned run.
Junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) drove in two runs and had two of the team's eight hits. Sophomore Braden Pelley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) had a two-run single to highlight a four-run second inning.
Sophomore Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) connected on a home run in the sixth inning.
Augustana (1-1) scored a run in the first inning, before Franklin (2-1) answered with four runs in the second inning. The Vikings trimmed the deficit to 4-3 behind two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Brock had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning to plate freshman A.J. Schomber (Sunman, Ind./East Central). The Grizzlies scored one run in each of the sixth and seven innings.
In the first game, Augustana rallied from 2-0 deficit by tallying three runs in the fifth inning and five more runs in the sixth inning.
Franklin resumes play in the RussMatt Classic against Capital University (Ohio) on Monday, February 25 at 1 p.m.
